The Inspiration

Madrone is a beautiful tree which grows throughout this property in Napa, California and is greatly enjoyed by the clients. Its bark is smooth and reddish-brown in color (similar to a Manzanita).

The Space

The existing kitchen hood area built into this new home was finished like a standard wall and features a gentle "french" curve taper in its shape. The exhaust unit, smaller than the overall hood area, is built into the existing hood area framework.

The Copper

Raw 16 oz. sheet copper clads the hood area surface and incorporates into the exhaust unit. The sculpted limb and leaves conceal the seam between the sheets of cladding (sheet copper is 48" wide max., so to cover a 54" area I joined two sheets along the path of the limb).
